Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2010.
Bowel health and oral health problems are common in the elderly, but the degree to which bowel health and oral health are independent risk factors for poor health related quality of life (HRQoL) is unknown. This study examined the relationships among HRQoL, bowel health as measured by the Fecal Incontinence and Severity Index (FISI), and oral health as measured by the Oral Health Impact Prevalence instrument (OHIP-7), in the multistage National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2005--2006, using a retrospective cross-sectional survey design. The purpose of the study was to explore how OHIP-7 and FISI relate to HRQoL in seniors. HRQoL as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention includes measures of general health, healthy days, mental health, and activity limitations. The conceptual framework used in this study follows the socioeconomic-health pathway. The research questions of the study evaluate whether associations exist between (1) HRQoL measures, (2) FISI, and (3) oral health (OHIP-7) after adjusting for other variables. Data analysis methods used in this study include logistic regression. Non-Hispanic Whites reported the least impact of oral health on HRQoL measures ( p<0.01). Seniors with a spouse, those with a college degree, and those who earned more than 300% federal poverty level income reported the least impact of oral health on HRQoL measures (p<0.01). FISI prevalence was related to physical disability sub-domains of OHIP-7 measure (p<0.001). Results will assist policy makers and practitioners to recognize the role of oral health in advancing health and oral health related quality of life in seniors.
