Distress due to negative perceptions of body image is continuously gaining attention in the health and psychological world. Female adolescents present as being at greater risk for harboring negative perceptions of their body images as well as low self-esteem and self-concept. How these adolescent females view themselves is a reflection of the pressures presented to them by parents, peers, the media and society as a whole. As a result, issues emerge such as eating disorders, weight concerns, anxiety, depression and overall lack of satisfaction with life. Ethnicity of the adolescent female may also contribute to the perceptions held about body image. The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of African American adolescent females regarding their body image and to determine to what extent such ideals effect self-esteem and life satisfaction.
