Empirical evidence has supported the notion that self-awareness processes are related to successful work performance. Building on the work of Ashley (2007), a pilot study was conducted to develop a self-awareness measure suitable for use in validation efforts. The present research was designed to use the newly developed scale to clarify the factor structure of self-awareness and provide a practical test of the self-awareness/work performance link. Results were mixed. A confirmatory factor analysis provided only a marginal fit, thus suggesting the need for more work on model specification. The link between self-awareness and the work performance measures also provided mixed results, with some significant self-awareness/work performance associations found for group settings but not for settings involving dyads.
