Thesis (M.S.)--Howard University, 2010.
Participant pretest arousal may result in inaccurate cardiovascular baseline measurements, because of participant's anticipation of the testing event(s), and the novelty of the laboratory setting. However, participants may be less aroused post-test when anticipation and novelty effects decrease. In the current study, pre- and post test arousal was measured and compared using two indices of the sympathetic nervous system (Pre-ejection Period, and Cardiac Sympathetic Index), and two indices of the parasympathetic nervous systems (Log Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia and Cardiac Vagal Index), to test which time period is more effective for measuring baseline. One index, Log Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia, indicated that pretest arousal was significantly lower than post-test arousal. Though findings yield insufficient evidence to support post-test baseline collection, future studies should explore alternative methods. In addition, the psychopysiological effects of laboratory novelty and testing should be investigated using a diversity of personality research methods.
