65M Mars Polar Lander failure. A qualitative methodology was developed to apply Juran's six step quality planning road map to interface definition to assess its usefulness in defining interfaces. Department of Defense publications, professional engineering standards and professional literature served as the voice of the customer to populate Juran's interlocking spreadsheets. These spreadsheets related customers to customers' needs, customers' needs to product features, product features to processes and processes to controls. The spreadsheets were analyzed to determine those processes and information flows needed to capture interface specifying data throughout the system life cycle. The resulting processes and information flows were represented in a systems engineering model using the systems modeling language (SysML). The SysML model was used to verify the data flow diagrams of Juran's technique. Juran's technique and the SysML model were subjected to a Delphi review by interface analysis and systems engineering subject matter experts (SME). The SME self-selected from 120 invitees known to the researcher during the last 25 years of professional association on various defense and NASA programs. The SME responses were captured in a Likert scale questionnaire which was augmented by open ended questions. No defect or difficulty was found that would indicate why Juran's process did not appear in the interface literature determined by the Literature Review. A practical application of the results contained herein would be to employ the insights relating the voice of the customer needs and Juran's process guidance to create a product that provides automated support for the processes found by the Juran six step process or to expand an existing product to provide automated support for the processes found by the Juran six step process. Potential further research recommended: define interface executable electronic distribution, examine systems engineering from the quality function deployment perspective, examine systems engineering's and quality engineering's contemporaneous maturity, and examine the introduction of Capability Maturity Model Integration considerations into Juran's process.
