Many Protestant churches are facing challenges in respect to church growth. Churches are struggling to survive in a culture where modernity is the order of the day. Some churches are experiencing congregational growth in a time when church attendance is declining. Many of the congregations experiencing church growth have focused their attention on management strategies, marketing techniques, evangelism methods, and various worship styles. Preaching is seldom discussed as a solution for the issues that face growing congregations.

520 $a Building on the study and work of sociologists Penny Becker and Nancy Ammerman, this paper suggests that conflict and tensions within the congregation can be detected and resolved. Persons in emerging congregations need to address rather than ignore the issues created by numerical growth. This recent comparative analysis of twenty-three churches and synagogues explores conflict in congregations. Though preaching was not offered as a solution, this analysis of churches and synagogues laid the groundwork for preaching to be the solution to help ease and resolve the challenges that exist in growing congregations. Thematic preaching, addressing issues within emerging congregations, did not ignore the conflict but met it head on. The author proposes that thematic preaching can assist a church growing numerically to refocus on its goals with clarity and to help strengthen one's identity as community. This thesis is tested through a case study at Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri.
520 $a Chapter 1 explores the primary aspects of God's revelatory and redemptive plan for humankind. It is through the church presented in Luke-Acts that we examine the meaning of church growth for contemporary times. Chapter 2 focuses on the human community known as the church. It is through the interactions of the body of Christ that we address the issues of conflict and tension. Chapter 3 is an effort to move towards a theology of preaching from an African American perspective to explain its relationship to church growth. Chapter 4 details the case study that was conducted at Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The project included six sessions with a focus group and six thematic preaching events. Questionnaires and focus group conversations were used to measure the impact of this endeavor. The results and conclusions are given in Chapter 5. Sermons preached and recorded on CD is enclosed with other pertinent information in the appendices.
