Sermonic space is a crucial dimension of preaching. In this dissertation, sermonic space is explored and developed as a revitalizing concept for Reformed preaching. The concept of sermonic space is further developed and clarified in the context of four preaching workshops offered to Commissioned Lay Pastors in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in the Presbytery of New Hope in eastern North Carolina. The role of Commissioned Lay Pastor (CLP) has been developed to address the shortage of traditionally trained and ordained ministers available to serve in parish contexts within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

This dissertation first examines the inception and development of the CLP category of ministry employing facets of John Calvin's theology and then focuses on the particular CLP task of preaching. In this effort, Calvin's theology is used to highlight the particular emphasis of the Reformed tradition in the preaching task. Next, preaching is framed employing the thought of psychoanalytic thinker, D. W. Winnicott. Using Winnicott's conception of transitional space, sermonic space is presented as crucial to the homiletic endeavor. Sermonic space refers to a dimension of preaching in which, through the activity of the Holy Spirit, the multiple conversation partners of scripture-preacher, scripture-congregation and preacher-congregation can be most fruitfully engaged. CLPs found the concept of sermonic space useful and liberating. The hope and intent of this dissertation is that it can help in highlighting a crucial dimension of preaching for CLPs as well as for all Reformed preachers.
