Existentialist thought had a significant impact on the 20th century philosophical landscape. With concepts such as freedom, choice, transcendence, anguish and bad faith, existentialist writers rigorously defended the principle of self determination and maintained that our life choices are ultimately our own responsibility. In a very contingent 21st century, a number of sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, psychotherapists and criminologists are now re-discovering the significance of existentialism for their own disciplines. In this collection the focus is on the existential predicaments and choices that underpin current debates and developments in the governance of crime and criminal justice. The contributions included{C8}aim to further criminologists' acknowledgement and understanding of existentialist thought, as well as their appreciation of the relevance of existentialist thought for enhancing a critical and philosophically inspired criminological imagination.
