Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
After over a century of a profession that has been founded upon social justice and social change, poor and oppressed communities continue to suffer. The most defining, historical characteristic of the social work profession, the response to the needs of the poor and oppressed, is in jeopardy today as many social workers flee towards more lucrative markets despite their professed commitment to social work values and ethics. The purpose of this research study was to examine to what extent Master of Social Work (MSW) students perceive they are dedicated to social justice values and how much they are influenced by the capitalistic values that contradict social justice. The study consisted of 40 students in the MSW program at California State University, Long Beach.

The findings of this study were indicative of a severe lack of dialogue on important social issues. Strong beliefs in individualism were signified along with a treacherous lack of emphasis on community organizing from the ground up. The mental health of MSW students can be in a state of distress when they are pushed to work for social justice, yet are not involved in dialogue on what it means or how to achieve it. The MSW curriculum must be modified to address the systemic causes of poverty, racism, sexism, and other pressing problems of today. Finally, educators must create a dialogue on what social justice means and how it can be achieved.
