The purpose of this narrative project was to examine the narrator's experience of being diagnosed with melanoma and the impact it had on her life. Relevant literature was reviewed about cancer, skin cancer, and melanoma. Scholarly narratives and illness narratives were also evaluated in the literature review. The narrator shares with her readers the distress of being treated for skin cancer and the diagnosis changed her life. The author's hope is that her narrative will illicit behavior change with regards to sun protection, thus leading to skin cancer prevention. The author also hopes that this narrative will provide social workers with useful insights when working with clients diagnosed with serious illnesses.
