Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 1988.
This study tests an integrated multi-dimensional model of professional commitment, developed for this study, for a sample drawn from one national professional association, the Canadian Association of Social Workers. Professional commitment as the dependent study variable is considered as both behaviour and attitudes and as such encompasses commitment to professional roles, relationships, and rules or norms. Professional commitment involves identification, positive involvement, attachment, and internalization of professional roles, relationships, and rules as influenced by both a calculative and a moral sense of commitment. It is one of the anticipated outcomes of the socialization processes which include anticipatory, professional education and organizational socialization. These processes and outcomes are influenced by the processes of professionalization experienced by an occupation. In addition, selected socio-demographic and personality factors will influence the processes of socialization and professionalization, and the development of commitment.
