America averages 1.2 million high school dropouts per year, costing the United States 300 billion dollars in lost wages, taxes, and productivity. A student's decision to drop out of school is an event that typically occurs after the student has thought about quitting school for several years and has endured several negative experiences. Research has shown that students' sense of belonging, engagement in learning, and didactic outcomes are related to the quality of the teacher-student relationship. This qualitative study investigated how students perceived their relationship with their teachers and how these perceptions related to the students' engagement in learning, academic achievement, and the decision to stay in school. Semi-structured, open-ended questions guided the interviews. Participants were 14, eleventh or twelfth grade students from a southern Nevada high school. Students described two relationships with their teachers, one positive and one negative, by reflecting on their experiences within the classroom that led to their perceptions of their teacher-student relationships. Participants explained how those relationships related to their learning outcomes and to what extent they valued the relationship with their teachers.
