The research in high school literacy instruction has been nominal to this point, and this study provides more research in the body of knowledge concerning high school literacy instruction. This study focused on students in a small rural school that has a large population of struggling readers. Parents were eager to find any assistance possible for their children and hoped for a positive outcome from the study. They allowed the students in the treatment group to remain after school or come early for extra instruction that was individualized for each students' needs based upon the results of the pre assessment. With the belief that students who enter secondary school with literacy skill deficits may benefit from intense individualized instruction in reading strategies, this quasi-experimental MANOVA study was designed to assess whether the treatment group would show more growth than the control group. Students were administered a pre and post treatment assessment and the data was analyzed. The treatment addressed individualized student needs based upon the preassessment results using Woodcock Johnson III NU Test of Achievement. The broad reading section evaluated letter-word recognition, reading fluency, word attack skills, and short passage comprehension. The reading comprehension section evaluated passage comprehension and reading vocabulary. The age equivalent score is used to approximate the subject's age equivalence in a specific battery of scores. The results of this study were beneficial and exposed the need for more studies in the area of high school literacy instruction.
