Thesis (M.P.H.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2016.
This study examined the impact teleworking has on individual's work-life balance, specifically issues associated with role and boundary/border management, and looked at the perceived experiences of teleworkers. Additionally, this study investigated how teleworking impacts health-promoting behaviors. The study design for this research study is a qualitative phenomenological study using one-on-one, in-depth interviews for data collection. A qualitative method was chosen because this study seeks to describe the impact teleworking has on one's work-life balance and health behaviors. The research questions for this study were: How is work-life balance impacted by teleworking? How are boundaries and roles maintained or not maintained when the workplace is also one's home? Does working from home improve or inhibit one's ability to participate in health-promoting behaviors? Data collected from eight one-on-one interviews was described. In the eight interviews that were completed, five major themes emerged from the data: Teleworkers in this study perceived an improved work-life balance from teleworking, telework impacts role boundaries, the flexibility of a telework schedule impacts family-life and work-life roles both positively and negatively, teleworkers often feel a lack of social connections to coworkers, teleworking can have a positive impact on health-promoting behaviors. Overall teleworking was a reported by the participants to be both professionally and personally satisfying phenomenon. This is especially true among mothers of school children. However, the participants also reported working during personal/family time or taking care of personal/family tasks during work time, pushing the boundaries of each role they hold and of work-life balance.
