The present study was designed to evaluate styles of conflict management and determine which method was most associated with marital satisfaction. Of the sixty-two people who participated in this study, twenty-six were male and thirty-six were female. The first group of participants were gathered from a court mandated program called P.E.A.C.E., which provides both legal and psychological education for couples or families going through the divorce/reorganization process. The term reorganization was utilized in the present study to describe couples that were not divorced/ing but were in the process of altering their relationship or families (Still Married-Divorcing, Non-Married-Living Together, and Never-Married-Never Living Together). The second group of participants were gathered from married couples. Attempts were made to recruit participants who were equally representative of gender, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

Based upon previous research, it was hypothesized in this study that a collaborative conflict management style would significantly positively correlate with marital satisfaction, while a competitive conflict management style would significantly negatively correlate with marital satisfaction. Results indicated that significant relationships did not exist among collaborative or competitive conflict management styles and marital satisfaction. It was also hypothesized that increased conflict frequency and conflict intensity would both significantly negatively correlate with marital satisfaction. Results indicated that significant relationships did exist among conflict frequency/conflict intensity and marital satisfaction. Results also suggested that the frequency and intensity of conflict was more of an accurate predictor of marital satisfaction than the type of conflict management style employed (collaborative). It was also hypothesized that married couples would report utilizing a collaborative conflict management style more frequently and maintain higher levels of marital satisfaction than couples currently attending the P.E.A.C.E. program. Results indicated that no significant difference was found in the groups' (married or divorced/reorganized) use of conflict management style and an individual's relationship status was more of an accurate indicator of marital satisfaction than the type of conflict management style employed. Results of the final hypothesis also suggested that a significant path did not exist among styles of conflict management (collaborating, competing, cooperating, avoiding, accommodating), dimensions of conflict (frequency and intensity), and marital satisfaction (high/low).
