Thesis (M.S.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 1993.
The present study was conducted to examine the effects of giving an external excuse, an internal excuse, or accepting responsibility upon the evaluation of a test cheater by an audience; it also examined the effects of participant's locus-of-control upon evaluation of the excuse-making strategy. The cheater was held more to blame when he gave an external excuse than when he gave an internal excuse or accepted responsibility. The cheater was evaluated more negatively and the crime judged more serious when he gave either excuse than when he accepted responsibility. The cheater was judged least remorseful when giving an external excuse, more remorseful when giving an internal excuse, most remorseful when accepting responsibility. Internal participants judged the cheating as caused by the cheater, more serious, and recommended a stiffer grade penalty than did external participants. The results were related to past research on accounting strategies, responsibility, and excuse-making.Subjects--Topical Terms:
