Social engineering attacks are on the rise in the 21st century. Cyber-criminals are targeting organizations with social engineering tactics, due to human weaknesses. As reports of social engineering attacks on businesses continue, security professionals are unable to prohibit social engineering in the 21st century. However, understanding the topic is of value to investigators as well as would-be victims in mitigating the risks associated with inevitable attacks. Businesses lose their reputation, customers, and money when a successful attack occurs. The purpose of this capstone project was to examine the effects of social engineering attacks on organizations. Humans are the most vulnerable exploit available to social engineering attacks. Human curiosity is the weakest link to businesses attempting to defend against social engineering attacks. Cyber-criminals use social engineering techniques on humans to gain easy access to computer systems without physically hacking into the companies networks. Businesses suffered various types of data breaches because of the human factor. Companies like Target and Home Depot lost millions of dollars to data breaches. Social engineering attacks continue to be a great concern for the private and public sectors worldwide. In order for corporations to slow down future social engineering attacks, employee awareness programs are necessary. Employee awareness programs encourage individuals to take an active role in the fight against social engineering attacks on businesses. The awareness programs can allow the employee to become conscientious of the information disseminated by telephone, Internet, and in person.
