Many Information Technology (IT) professionals from U.S. organizations are not aware of the current best practices for IT service management, and many personnel are not familiar with the current standards of best practices that are available for IT governance and management. This problem has become more concerning as organizations attempt to align IT with Business objectives. As business reliance on information technology continues to grow, IT managers must meet these growth demands and find affordable management solutions to overall organizational IT requirements. In this study the researcher sought to determine which frameworks or standards of best practice for IT service management were used most by IT managers within U.S. corporations. The researcher also sought to determine if the framework or standard of best practice used was comparable to the processes contained within the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) version 3 framework. The population surveyed in this study represented Information Technology professionals within the United States who were members of the Survey Monkey audience and were age 18 or older. The research methodology for this study was a quantitative, descriptive study. The researcher found that out of 395 respondents surveyed ITIL was reported more than any other framework as the method used by their organization for IT service management or information technology governance. ITIL and other management frameworks, such as ISO/IEC 20000, Six Sigma, the Microsoft Operations Framework, the Project Management Body of Knowledge, and Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT), are among the most used management frameworks within U.S. organizations. Further research must be done in order to determine the benefits of each framework.
