Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2008.
This thesis, which is based on both research and independent fieldwork, examines the carved wooden sculptures that are created by contemporary artists living in the Puuc region of Yucatan, Mexico. The project explores the effects of international tourism on the commodification of local Maya culture, and also considers how globalization (the larger socioeconomic trend within which international tourism is situated) affects perceptions of Maya identity among both the artisan producers and touristic consumers of such aesthetic artifacts.

In addition to introductory material and concluding thoughts, the thesis is divided into five main sections: History, Identity, Artists, Carvings, and Case Studies. The Introduction provides an overview of the existing art historical, ethnographic, and anthropological research on ethnic art traditions, as well as my own research methodology and a brief introduction of principal informants. Chapter 2 traces the evolution of Western notions of "Art," from the theories of the German critical historians, to the formalist aesthetics of the influential art critic, Clement Greenberg, and finally to the decline of the latter paradigm at the start of the Postmodern era. This discussion will help situate ethnic and tourist arts, like the Puuc woodcarvings, within a broader scheme. Chapter 3 explores the question of Maya cultural identity from a scholarly or "outsider" perspective while also considering an "insider's" view by offering the artists' thoughts on their heritage, customs and the effects of modernization on their culture. In Chapter 4 the woodcarving tradition is investigated through conversations with four Puuc artists who reveal how their backgrounds, beliefs, inspirations and goals influence their work. Chapter 5 takes a closer look at the carvings themselves and considers the choice of subject matter, artistic process, and the personal carving style of each artist to determine how, working in such close proximity, they distinguish themselves from one another yet still comprise a cohesive "school" whose style is recognizable from that of other areas of handicraft production in Yucatan. Finally, in Chapter 6 I consider woodcarving industries elsewhere in Yucatan to provide comparisons for the Puuc tradition.
