China is aging fast. The rapidly aging population is challenging traditional Chinese patterns of family-based elder care that emphasize filial piety. The traditional concept of filial piety requires adult children to provide direct care for their physically dependent parents and has long been considered the major cultural force holding together China's system of familial elder care, but because of smaller family size, two wage-earner couples and increased geographic mobility, many families find family care difficult to practice, and require institutional care to help with the situation. However, institutionalization is a decision that involves more than one generation in a typical Chinese family, which means that institutional care in China doesn't only need to satisfy the needs of the elders, but also other family members. The main purpose of this thesis is to study how different generations in China conceptualize filial piety when applied to elder care and how do these differences affect the future of elder care in China based on data collected from 32 semi-structured individual interviews and one participatory workshop, and discuss possible solutions such as intergenerational housing, co-housing and community-based services for the future elder care in China.
