The use of unmanned systems and robotic teleoperation has dramatically increased in recent years. Technological advances and apparent capabilities create a rising demand for fielding systems. The requirements placed on operators are ever expanding as the operator to system ratio is shifting from multiple operators per system to multiple systems per operator. This paradigm is adding many more tasks to the operator's collective workload. One area that has gone unaddressed is how task interference might affect dual task performance. The present study examined the impact of multiple resource theory by having participants complete a visual perceived, spatially processed, and manual response unmanned search & rescue task while simultaneously loading them with an auditory perceived, spatially processed, and verbal response task to determine interference effects. The present study found that there was significant interference effects for the Dual-Task group. This led to lower performance of the Dual-Task group in both the primary and secondary tasks. Additionally, participants in the Dual-Task group reported higher levels of mental workload and lower levels of situation awareness/immersion.
