Photojournalistic images today are distributed around the world via the Internet across a spectrum of demographics that represent various cultural, ethnic and religious perspectives. Visual communication passes messages through images that carry layers of interpretation of meanings. Successful communication depends not only on the intent of the photojournalist but also on the interpretation of the viewer as well.

Viewers believe images are true by their very nature; they believe an image is representative of a real situation. Photojournalists, as professional truth-seekers and truth-tellers, strive to provide images as accurate representations of covered situations. But, developments with technology and the rapid spread of information have created avenues for photographic distribution that are not always intended by the photojournalist. No longer can the demographics for an audience be narrowly and easily defined. Therefore, photojournalists are faced with the challenges of intercultural interactions with their subjects in their images as well as possible cross-cultural engagement in the delivery of their images to varying audiences around the globe. Photojournalists who intentionally and thoughtfully consider the diverse meanings inferred by viewers to photographic images need to be aware of rapidly changing audience demographics.

The research for this dissertation supports the premise that cultural differences influence how and what individuals read in images. Universal truths for human culture are supported, but distinctions also exist in the observations made in photojournalistic images by people of varying cultural backgrounds. Through interviews in Haiti, Indonesia, Mexico, rural and Suburban U.S., this research suggests that a common human response to images of human suffering exists alongside particular distinctions among cultural specific responses as well. It is in the midst of this nexus that the photojournalist works to communicate truth and reality through photographs.
