Whether a pastor is full-time, part-time, or bi-vocational, sermon preparation time is limited in many American churches. Even preachers who have adequate sermon preparation time approach the biblical text and their messages with only one "set of eyes." Both limited sermon preparation time and a single preacher engaging in the sermon preparation process alone, can result in missed exegetical details, ignored cultural norms that impact the audience, and stale application. Holding regular collaborative sermon preparation meetings with other preachers can help to negate these challenges. For purposes of this project, collaborative sermon preparation meetings are scheduled weekly and are a time for preachers to discuss exegetical details of the preaching text and potential illustrations and applications for the sermon. Each preacher ultimately writes his own sermon, but these meetings provide an opportunity to have multiple voices speaking into the process.When more experienced preachers lead these collaborative sermon preparation meetings, it provides them with an avenue for fulfilling the biblical command to equip leaders and it can help less experienced preachers to feel more confident in their sermons.Three multi-site churches took part in collaborative sermon preparation meetings for this project. The results showed a majority of the pastors who took part in collaborative sermon preparation meetings wanted to make them a regular practice in their church and a majority of less experienced preachers who took part in collaborative sermon preparation meetings felt more confident in their sermons as a result of their participation in the meetings.
