Western choral music from before the Classical period is rarely taught, studied or performed in China. Chinese music teachers and conductors tend to program choral arrangements of traditional and popular Chinese songs as well as original Chinese choral pieces, but relatively little Western choral music. Choirs and choral students in China can benefit from the performance and study of more repertoire of a variety of styles, origins and time periods, including historical Western music. Italian and English madrigals are good options for inclusion in Chinese choral curricula. They hold an important place in the history of Western choral music and can contribute to knowledge of music history in general for Chinese students. In addition, Italian and English madrigals are well suited for study and performance in Chinese higher education choral programs. They are accessible with regard to language, performing forces, difficulty level, secular themes and score availability, and offer valuable historical and geographical perspectives in the Chinese choral curricula. This study includes ten recommended madrigals, three Italian and seven English, appropriate for performance and study, along with performance and pronunciation guides (including in English and Mandarin) and recommended, free editions of the works to facilitate their performance and study.
