This exploratory study analyzed English language learners' (ELLs') ability to infer the meaning of unknown words by utilizing a lexical inferencing cue self-titled by the author of the study the comma-or-comma clue. A series of assessments designed to measure how well participants were able to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by using comma-or-comma clues was administered to a treatment and a control group. Evidence was found that ELLs in the treatment group, who received explicit instruction on how to recognize and utilize comma-or-comma clues, were more successful at using this lexical inferencing cue to understand unfamiliar words than those in the control group.
