Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
This dissertation asserts that biblical gender roles and the biblical understanding of sexual expression are found in a mature understanding and explication of biblical anthropology. Today's sexual corruption is the direct result of ignoring and rejecting the biblical doctrine of humanity. The church and Christian families need to teach biblical anthropology to teenagers. Mature understanding and explication of biblical anthropology helps young people to see gender and sexuality by a God-centered point of view. Chapter 1 introduces the research problem, thesis statement, and background information for the dissertation. Chapter 2 explores a definition of humanity by comparing biblical anthropology and unbiblical anthropology. The biblical view of humanity contrasts with secular contemporary views of humanity. Trying to understand and define biblical anthropology helps every Christian to distinguish great differences between biblical and unbiblical points of view on humanity. Chapter 3 engages with three specific complications to show how the lack of biblical anthropology informs the gender roles and sexual expression of teenagers. The first complication involves an ontological concern regarding human existence. The second complication focuses on an internal crisis caused by gender role confusion and distorted manhood and womanhood. Finally, chapter 3 examines the external crisis of deviant sexual behaviors in teenagers' lives. Grasping these complications is particularly significant in order to demonstrate how important biblical anthropology can be in leading teenagers to biblical gender roles and sexual expression. Chapter 4 elaborates on the implications of this study, based on essentials of biblical anthropology. The essentials are significant because they are the starting point for bringing teenagers into a biblical understating of gender roles and sexual expression. Focusing on the principles of biblical anthropology equips the church and Christian families to lead teenagers in the direction of building a biblical gender identity. Furthermore, they prepare and equip teenagers to determine biblical gender roles and sexual expression for themselves. Chapter 5 provides a conclusion to the dissertation, along with a summary of the dissertation, and recommendations for further research.
