The education gap between Latinx/a/o and White students is a longstanding problem in the American education system. This gap has enormous implications for social and economic equality given the shifting demographics in the United States and the need for higher education as a vehicle for social mobility. Because Latinx/a/o students entering college place a greater value on helping others in difficulty than students from other racial/ethnic groups, the high impact practice of service learning was a focus of this dissertation. The purpose of this study was to investigate if service learning participation and a service-oriented campus culture predict academic success in the first-year of college for Latinx/a/o students in comparison to White students. Responses to the annual national survey Your First College Year (YFCY) administered by UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute in 2016 were utilized to conduct this analysis while controlling for pre-college characteristics. After cleaning the data, the sample for analysis included 4,730 student respondents of which 745 were Latinx/a/o and 3,985 were White. Results revealed that service learning participation was not a significant predictor of academic success, which was measured by GPA in the first year of college. However, both service-orientation of the institution and satisfaction with opportunities for community service were significant predictors of first-year college GPA, suggesting that this topic deserves further investigation. As expected from previous research, Latinx/a/o ethnicity, being a first-generation college student, coming from a lower-income family, and having a lower GPA in high school were associated with lower grades in the first college year. Implications for higher education policies and practices are discussed, as are implications for the social work profession.
