Thesis (Ed.D.)--Texas Wesleyan University, 2015.
This qualitative study was designed to investigate the perceptions of high school students and their parents as to the impact of music education upon their lives. The purposive sample was gathered from upper grade level students enrolled in, and parents associated with, public urban high schools, private schools, and fine arts academies. Participants consisted of high school students of both sexes in 11th and 12th grades. Parent interviews of high school students enrolled in music education were also included in the study. Through face-to-face individual interviews participants gave responses relating to their perceptions of the effects of music education on the academic, social and emotional outcomes. Responses were recorded and coded. Results of the study reveal that participants believe that the outcome of music participation affects their lives academically, socially, and emotionally. These findings may benefit school music programs by providing validity for funding, the hiring of qualified music teachers, fine arts graduation requirements and college preparedness.
