This study assessed the perceptions of male and female coaches toward females who coach male teams and their ability to coach a winning team, with the aim of determining whether the perception plays a role in limiting the participation of women in the coaching of male teams. The study was based on qualitative phenomenological approach. Six semistructured interviews were obtained from basketball coaches from primary and secondary levels in central Florida. The obtained data were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings regarding the perception of males toward female basketball coaches were inconclusive. Findings showed that male coaches did not perceive themselves to be better than the female coaches, whereas female coaches believed that male basketball coaches were perceived as being better. The identified barriers that hinder the participation of female coaches at the primary and secondary levels included unfavorable nature of the coaching policies and regulations, low pay, male domination, insensitive coaching environment, and gendered ideologies. The relevant stakeholders should take the necessary steps to address the identified barriers to enhance the participation of female coaches in the coaching of male basketball teams and provide a more conducive and diverse working environment.
