The purpose behind this study is to understand the developmental processes and issues that influence the emergence of female ministry leaders in theologically egalitarian environments. Women leadership emergence is not well understood because, historically, those pursuing equality have emphasized similarities between men and women leaders. As a result of this thinking, leadership development has not been studied or adjusted for potential differences between men and women's leadership development. Unfortunately, this approach has not resulted in equal outcomes for either gender from leadership pipelines. This study begins with an exploration of the literature around egalitarian theology, women's mission praxis and theology, and the history of Pentecostalism and feminism. J. Robert Clinton's leadership emergence theory and Elizabeth Glanville's application of that theory to women are explored, as are studies that identify environmental issues that affect female leadership emergence as well as inner processing that female leaders must engage. Finally, the literature review examines the development of personal influence, important relationships, and leadership communication. Based on the gaps found in the literature, a qualitative study took place using interviews, focus groups, and a survey that sought data from a total of seventy-eight female and male local church leaders. Their individual leadership influence was analyzed through a grounded theory approach to track factors of leadership development for five categories of leadership influence. From this was created a new model of seven processes working to shape an emerging female leader and her influence. These were overlaid onto Clinton's timeline model to update his and Glanville's work. Also included is an update to models of male and female ministry partnerships. Following this research was the creation of an eight-session training curriculum for female leaders that was piloted with a group of young female leaders from different churches. Initial data about their development was analyzed and followed up with a post-pilot survey. Key outcomes were increased confidence and the beginnings of a peer network. Conclusions include the presentation of recommendations for churches looking to build pipelines for female leaders and suggestions for further research in this area.Mentor: Elizabeth Glanville, PhD 340 Words.
