The major aims of this study were to modify and expand an existing instrument for estimating the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in a sample of female elementary school teachers, to compare the prevalence rates for teachers with different characteristics, and to identify possible factors related to LUTS. The Taiwan Teacher Bladder Survey (TTBS) was developed for this study. After the validity and reliability of the TTBS had been established, a cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted using a population of 9,401 female elementary school teachers in 152 elementary schools in Taipei. A systematic sampling method with probability proportional to size (pps) was used to select 26 elementary schools from the 152 elementary schools. In each of the 26 schools, a simple random sample of 20 female school teachers was selected. Among the 520 selected teachers, 68 refused to answer the surveys. Among the remaining 452 selected teachers, 430 completed the surveys which resulted in a response rate of 82.7% (430/520). Adding the 41 completed surveys collected from 68 substitute teachers, a total of 471 completed surveys were received, of which 445 were usable.

520 $a The prevalence rates for different types of LUTS ranged from 9.9% to 33.9%. Using logistic regression analyses, associations between some individual characteristics (age, body mass index, vaginal delivery, obstetric and/or gynecological surgery and family history) and LUTS were confirmed; the relationship between three personal habits (caffeine consumption, bladder habits and regular exercise) and LUTS were identified; the effects of two work-related factors (frequency of straining to lift and job control) on LUTS were shown; and two health-related conditions (chronic cough and chronic constipation) were related to LUTS, also.
520 $a This study contributes to knowledge about LUTS in employed women in Taiwan, as well as indicating the prevalence of LUTS and factors related to LUTS among employed women. Because several risk factors were identified, programs for improving teachers' symptom(s), strategies for prevention and treatment can be developed and implemented for female school teachers who are in certain risk categories. Based on these results, intervention studies that incorporate personal habits and workplace modifications can be designed.
