This dissertation will argue that the most appropriate and helpful approach to discerning the theological significance of the so-called School of Antioch is one that is theologically comprehensive but also distinctly biblical-hermeneutical. Chapter 1 begins by previewing the historical significance of the city of Antioch, its cultural relevance within the ancient world, and the asketerion for which it would come be associated within Christendom. Additionally, the occasion for this study is presented-the claims that the School of Antioch should be viewed solely with respect to its christological legacy. Chapter 2 assesses the merits of an exclusively christological approach to the School of Antioch. Various claims regarding the ancient figures Diodore of Tarsus, Theodore of Mopsuestia, and Nestorius, which would seek to situate the three as christological heretics, are examined systematically by surveying Antiochene scholarship as well as some primary sources believed to be written by Theodore. The chapter concludes with the assertion that an exclusively christological approach to the School of Antioch is insufficient for recovering its full theological significance. Chapter 3 begins by arguing that a theologically comprehensive approach to the School of Antioch which is distinctly biblical-hermeneutical requires correction to unfortunate misunderstandings. Specifically, Chapter 3 addresses the caricature surrounding the School of Antioch which posits its interpreters as those read the Bible as simple and rigid literalists. Contrary to this false understanding, this chapter will recover the Antiochene approach to spiritual interpretation by examining the concepts of typology, theoria, and mimesis. Chapter 4 addresses historical interpretation within the School of Antioch as it has sometimes been overexaggerated in modern scholarship and inappropriately linked to the historical-critical movement. For this recovery, the Antiochene understanding and usage of historia will first be examined. This chapter will conclude by comparing the methodological and theological differences between the ancient Antiochenes and the historical-critics of the modern era. Chapter 5, building upon the clarifications provided in prior chapters, will present a theologically-comprehensive approach to the School of Antioch by examining the relationship to exegesis and theology within the school by unpacking three distinctives: 1) the Antiochene view of Scripture; 2) the impact of classical rhetorical training upon the biblical-hermeneutics of Antioch; and 3) the rootedness of the Antiochenes in the Nicene theological movement.
