Thesis (M.S.)--D'Youville College, 2017.
The purpose of this study was to determine if resistance training athletes were consuming above, below, or within the recommended amount of carbohydrates according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians of Canada, and the American College of Sports Medicine. This study also assessed the knowledge of carbohydrates among resistance training athletes. This descriptive study included 25 members of a local college who participated in resistance training exercise at least three times every week. The researcher used the ASA24 to collect and analyze the carbohydrate consumption of each athlete in a day and a questionnaire to determine the subject's knowledge of the macronutrient. Members from a local college who were 18 years and older who participated in resistance training exercise at least three days a week were eligible to participate in the study. Results of the study revealed that all participants consumed below the recommended amount of kilocalories and carbohydrates while 89% of athletes consumed greater than the recommendation of 20-30% of kilocalories from fat. Five of nine participants (56%) had inadequate carbohydrate knowledge. The results of this study suggest that resistance training collegiate athletes consume inadequate carbohydrates and have insufficient knowledge of carbohydrate needs. Additional research is needed in this area. Keywords: Resistance training, athlete, carbohydrates, kilocalories, macronutrient.
