This project explores ways in which virtual conferences can allow students to build more connections, relationships, and improve their overall experience to help them grow in their fields of interest. Covid has drastically changed the way students interact due to a huge shift from being in-person to virtual. More specifically, students feel more isolated in these virtual experiences and need a way to build more relationships with other people in their fields of interest. My work reimagines what virtual conferences can look like using virtual reality and 3D spaces. Conferences can be complex and have a lot of different moving parts. Here are some questions that my work seeks to address. Who and what is involved to have a full virtual conference? What are the current technical limitations to virtual reality conferences? How will users navigate in a virtual environment and find other attendees or rooms? What are the ways that designers can improve interactions in VR that are not possible through 2D platforms? I was able to address these questions through my primary and secondary research on virtual reality and academic conferences for students. I conducted surveys and interviews with students as well as professionals who work with virtual reality. I designed the 3D environment and the user interface for a virtual reality conference.
