Purpose: This quality improvement (QI) project aims to present emerging changes to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) 2022 Difficult Airway Algorithm. The intervention is provider education. This project will encompass multiple factors of airway management, including airway assessment tools, difficult airway algorithms, high flow nasal oxygenation, awake intubation, ultrasound for emergency airway management, human factors in difficult airway management, and closed claims analysis. A pre-education and post-education evaluation tool will be used to determine teaching effectiveness. Background: The ASA Difficult Airway Algorithm is updated every ten years to provide the best evidence-based practice guidelines in airway management. Nearly half of the airway claims involving patient death or brain damage are due to airway issues. Airway algorithms assist anesthesia providers during airway challenges and reduce patient complications.Method: Education provided via an online Panopto recording to anesthesia providers within the Arizona Anesthesia Solutions (AzAS) group. A 10-minute virtual educational presentation was emailed to approximately 100 anesthesia providers by the Regional Director. A pre- and post-intervention survey via Qualtrics was included to evaluate provider knowledge and confidence in the new practice guidelines. Results: 28 anesthesia providers completed the demographic questionnaire, 16 completed the pre-education survey, and 15 completed the post-survey. Improvement in the knowledge and confidence scores is seen in the results. Open-ended questions are used to determine airway challenges and determine improvement in clinical practice.
