The purpose of this study was to evaluate if personal characteristics and experience attributes have an effect on the final outcome of a collective decision. The psychological study of decision making and judgment under uncertainty is characterized by the role of the normative theory of rational confidence and choice. This theory addresses the way that people should make decisions. A quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational research design was used in this study. Data were collected from 76 participants in organizations who engaged in group decision-making exercises. Data on experience attributes (seniority, time on the job, leadership position, organizational experience, and familiarity with decision analysis methods) were collected as potential predictors of the dependent variable, the score representing individual-group decision consistency (defined when individual decision and that of the group were the same). Results from logistic regression analyses showed that, with the exception of organizational experience, these attributes did not predict the outcome; this finding suggests that other factors may be important in predicting final decision in a group decision-making process. Implications for positive social change include the attractiveness to improve the collective efficacy of group decision making in political and social entities, such as city councils, corporate boards of directors, parent-teacher associations, and state or national legislatures.
