The area of therapeutic rapport development is an understudied component in the current body of literature related to counseling adolescents. Many researchers have emphasized the importance of strong rapport development which contributes to positive treatment gains. However, mental health practitioners frequently approach adult and adolescent counseling treatment in various ways, suggesting differences in their rapport-building processes. I addressed this research question: What are the experiences of mental health professionals who provide counseling services to adolescent females for nonsuicidal self-injury regarding the formation of the therapeutic alliance they developed with their clients when they provided counseling services? In this qualitative grounded theory study, I interviewed 10 mental health professionals across the United States who described having experience providing counseling services to adolescent females struggling with nonsuicidal self-injury. Key findings from the data I gathered emphasized the importance of mental health professional traits which facilitate rapport building, session interventions that facilitate connection and trust in session, and vital components to building and maintaining safety within the therapeutic environment. Implications for this research focus on improving professionals' abilities to build strong therapeutic alliances with this client population as well as addressing how counseling graduate programs teach rapport-building to counselors-in-training.
