Organizations in Kenya have been implementing data security policies and procedures to prevent data loss. Users' awareness of already implemented policies and procedures could prompt the actions necessary to address and mitigate data loss risk. Organizational leaders in Kenya have responded aggressively to protect data in recent years but still strive to implement practical data security tools and techniques proven effective internationally. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to determine the effectiveness of data security policy implementations and procedures in organizations in Kenya. IT managers from organizations in Kenya were recruited through LinkedIn. Survey questions were used to collect data regarding the effectiveness of managers' current implementations of policies and procedures. Managers could elaborate on topics about which they felt passionate. Nine companies participated in the study each represented individually by one person. The results showed that employee training and awareness of security policies and procedures, lack of infrastructure, cost issues, and absence of legislation led to increased data breaches. Employee awareness and training should be emphasized to show employees how to follow policies and procedures enacted by security and technical teams. The findings further indicate the benefit of creating a rigorous knowledge base within the literature on data security issues, providing adequate measures to discuss data security problems, and implementing measures to resolve risk through data analysis would mitigate the risk on data breaches. Results of this study could be useful to organizational leaders for insights into the amount of training IT security professionals may need. Organizational leaders could use this knowledge to plan education and training strategies to improve their employees' ability to recognize and use security controls proactively against threats and vulnerabilities.
